What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns help protect the tooth, restore its shape and strength, and improve its appearance. At Studio Dental, crowns are carefully crafted to match the color, size, and contours of your natural teeth for a realistic and comfortable fit.
Why You Might Need a Dental Crown
Your dentist at Studio Dental may recommend a crown if you have:
- A cracked or broken tooth
- A large filling that needs added support
- A tooth that’s worn down or weakened
- A misshapen or severely discolored tooth
- A tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
- A dental implant that requires a natural-looking restoration
The Dental Crown Process
Exam and Tooth Preparation
Your dentist will examine your tooth and determine if a crown is the best solution. Digital X-rays may be taken if needed. The tooth is then gently reshaped to prepare it for the crown.
Digital Scanning
Instead of traditional impressions, we use advanced digital scanning technology to capture precise images of your tooth. These scans are sent to a trusted dental lab, where your custom crown is expertly crafted. A temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth while the permanent one is being made.
Crown Placement
Once your custom crown returns from the lab—usually within 1–2 weeks—you’ll return for your final visit. The temporary crown is removed, and your dentist will carefully check the fit, color, and bite before securely bonding the permanent crown in place.
Final Adjustments
Minor adjustments are made to ensure your bite feels natural and comfortable. Once complete, your tooth is fully restored in both function and appearance.
